Maths and Physics Masterclasses

On Wednesday 15th June the School of Maths and Physics took part in a day of masterclasses organised by the College of Science. Sixth form students from Lincoln College, North Lindsey College and Franklin College in Grimsby were given masterclasses in Computing, Biochemistry, Pharmacy, and Biomedical Science, as well as in both Maths and Physics.

The theme for the Physics session, which was held in the completed section of the new Isaac Newton Building, was physical constants. Students had the chance to experimentally measure the speed of light, the specific charge of the electron, and the acceleration due to gravity.

The Maths session was given in the form of an audience interactive lecture by Valentina Iusa, who presented a game based on the projective plane of order 2 (the “Fano plane”) which has seven elements. The game is an entertaining example of error-correcting code.
