‘The simplest model of a complex fluid’

by R.M.L. Evans,
School of Mathematics, University of Leeds.

Mike EvansAbstract:
Originally invented to describe magnetic materials, the classical XY model has the simplest interactions imaginable. Surprisingly, when subjected to counter-rotating boundaries, it exhibits the non-Newtonian flow regimes characteristic of soft matter. With an elaborate steady-state phase diagram but a very concise constitutive relation, it offers a paradigm for diverse non-equilibrium complex fluids.
