Charlotte Scott Research Centre for Algebra opens in Lincoln

On 7 February 2018 President of the London Mathematical Society Prof. Caroline Series FRS inaugurated the new research centre in the University of Lincoln — the Charlotte Scott Research Centre for Algebra. The centre is based at the School of Mathematics and Physics, where the Algebra Research Group was active from the very beginning, when the School opened in 2014. With Prof. Evgeny Khukhro as the director of the new centre, the algebraists in Lincoln conduct research on finite and infinite groups and their automorphisms, Lie algebras, profinite and locally finite groups, topological groups, permutation groups, polynomial algebra, algebraic number theory. The algebraists in Lincoln are supported by members of the School’s External Advisory Board including Prof. A. Borovik (Manchester), Prof. C. R. Leedham-Green (London), Prof. P. Shumyatsky (Brasilia), Prof. M. R. Vaughan-Lee (Oxford), Prof. J. Wilson (Oxford), Prof. E. Zelmanov (San Diego). Members of the centre have active research collaboration with colleagues in Australia, Brazil, France, Germany, Italy, Russia, Spain, Turkey, UK, USA. In 2016 the School of Mathematics and Physics has conducted the first ever mathematics conference in Lincoln Groups, rings, and their automorphisms dedicated to Evgeny Khukhro’s 60th birthday. The conference proved to be a resounding success for the new school, attracting participants from 10 countries. The creation of the Charlotte Scott Research Centre for Algebra is a testament to the strong point of mathematical research at the Lincoln School of Mathematics and Physics.
